Alyssa Shepard, PhD

Researcher and Writer

My name is Alyssa, and I am a research scientist with over 10 years of experience.

My main focus has been cancer research, but I’ve also completed projects in Alzhiemer’s disease. I have experience in the genetics of breast cancer, liquid biopsies for breast cancer detection, signaling pathways of the protein Yap, and target discovery and drug develop for NF2-related Schwannomatosis. I’m currently the world’s expert on in vivo models using the Naked Mole-Rat (the world’s most beautiful and long-lived rodent). Despite working with animals, I am passionate about promoting the research of alternative systems to replace animals in the laboratory.

I am a multi-published author and award-winning presenter for both seminars and poster presentations. I have also won many scholarships throughout my research career, including a US-UK Fulbright Scholarship for my master’s degree.

Outside of research, my passion lies in science writing, education, and promoting science literacy for all. I work as a volunteer science writer for the Pet Cancer Foundation, as well as a freelance science writer for academics, for Moffitt Cancer Center, and my own personal blog, Cats ‘N Lab Coats. I’ve previously worked with organizations like Massive Science and TEDMED.

I’m originally from Michigan, but have since migrated to sunny Florida. I lived in England for a time to get my master’s degree, and I miss the mild, rainy charm. I absolutely love cats, and have two boys named Marvin and Mob, who I would do anything for. In my free time, I like to collect and read manga, explore tattoos and other arts, and constantly pick up new crafts.

I’m still not entirely sure where my career will take me, but I am certain I want to inspire the next generation of scientist, and also teach others that anyone can understand and enjoy science!
